Lago Maggiore

  • About Lago Maggiore

Lago Maggiore is known as the ‘Greater Lake’ because of its size. It is the second largest lake in Italy. Located just below the Swiss Alps, the region of Lago Maggiore has adopted both Italian and Swiss nationalities and cultures. Fishing is a main event here, but if you are more of an observer you will find beautiful views of crystal clear waters and breathtaking backdrops around this lake.

  • History

Lago Maggiore has been a historic place in Italy for centuries but got its recognition when a wealthy family by the name of Borromeo bought up land all around the lake. To this day, the family still owns most of the property. The lake is unique for many reasons but one thing very interesting is that the lake never freezes because the water level changes so significantly between the different bodies of water surrounding the lake.

Along with being a hot spot for Aristocrats in the 16th century, the lake has seen its fair share of scandal:

    • In the 1920’s, Swiss architect, Marco Schmucklerski, drowned his Bugatti in the lake to avoid paying taxes on it. He planned to drag it out by chain after the tax audit but the chain corroded and the car wouldn’t be recovered until 1967
    • In the novel, Farewell to Arms by Earnest Hemingway, the lake was used for the main character and his lover to escape Italy and cross over into Swiss territory.
  • Weather

The weather at Lago Maggiore averages around 12-17℃ for the beginning of May.
